Re: the best film schools in the world
sorry for forgetting to write "Northwestern University" in the USA section
Re: the best film schools in the world
how is the film and TV program at UCLA? Is that a pretty good school and fairly easy to get into?
Re: the best film schools in the world
Do you have a source that ranked them? or is it just your personal opinion?
Re: the best film schools in the world
I think you may be a little off on some of those schools. You start naming me people that are working in executive and creative positions from places like Iowa and Wisconsin film schools. Even CalArts besides animation is a little rough to think of. You missed a couple very well known, established schools.

film school expert is there anyway I could talk with you about some film schools im interested in? My email is: Keit...@hotmail.com AIM- Keith0301 MSN - Keit...@hotmail.com I would really like to hear what you have to say about a select few Im thinking about. Also I was just curious, in alot of other lists I always see FSU in the top10, do you not consider it a top film school?
Re: the best film schools in the world
dear keith, thank you for confirming, well, I think I have to add FSU instead of Boston University
Re: the best film schools in the world
Can I ask you why you're making this list? If I wanted to make Hollywood, studio-system films, why would I see Columbia University as "the best film school"? If I wanted to make experimental DV pieces, why would I have any interest in USC? And what are you ranking them by? Equipment? Faculty? Actually, don't answer this; it's turned into a rhetorical question...
I agree ...
What are you ranking these on?? Any future editors out there? SVA has by far the best editing facilities on the east coast rivaling most production companies. Perhaps the best in the world. I dont know to many schools that even have Avid's ADRENALINE, do you?

Best Film Schools
There is an excellent film school at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond Virginia (rated no. 6 under top MFA-master of fine arts- programs in the 2004 US News & World Report) and it has had a graduate film program for over 40 years and now has an undergraduate film and photo program. It is part of the School of the Arts which is the No. 1 public arts school in the country. You can get more info about it at www.vcu.edu Just thought you might want to mention this amazing school on your website. The tuition is low and it's thye best thing you can get for your money as far as film schools go. why pay thousands at NYU and USC? spend that money on your film instead!

You guys are crazy. If you want...
the same quality education at a much more affordable cost, the New York Film Academy is where it is at. I don't see the point of spending all that money going to those other institutions. It doesn't make sense to me. Film is such a practical medium. You have to touch the film and get your hands dirty. I have talked to a million teachers and they all say the same thing. "Shoot, shoot, shoot. Then keep shooting. It's the only way to improve your craft." Athletes practice. Painters paint. Sculpters Scult. Filmmakers should shoot. And, yes, while it is more expensive, the rapid ascent of the quality of digital cameras and it's ever dwindling cost, make it even that much more realistic. And in terms of the teachers. Many of the teachers at the NYFA went to the USC and NYU and Columbia's. One of the reasons they are here is because they saw a need for an alternate type of education. One that was more hands on. I would rather go to the NYFA than any of those other schools. Let me know what you guys think. Christian
Re: the best film schools in the world
what about south seas film school in auckland, new zealand..the course costs about 18000 NZ$ would be about 10,000 US$ and the course is only a year long and intense with no letup and the graduates have got placements all over the world... will you call it the best? i did the course there and i think it is the best. if you get what you want out of a film school then it is the best but if you are not satisfied with it then no matter what other people say or do - it will never be the best for you.. so search around and find a place you really want to go to and follow your passion cheers amit www.unkreative.com

american list
that list is crap...ive visited half of those school and spoke with a variety of graduates from most of them and i can tell you that half of your choices are not accurate most specifically temple and cal arts..whose programs are more run down than could even accomidate aspiring filmmakers
Dutch film school
you reallz 4 got the Nederlandse Film e Televisie Academie in Amsterdam the Netherlands, which is ne of the best in europe
film
I think the list is very realistic and I agree that national film & tv school in UK is the best film school in the europe
film schools
Having gone to an excellent film school with soundstages and all the equipment you can dream of, I realized that its not about the school but what you make as a reel during your stay. Spending your time making intelligent pieces of work in any school, regardless of its rank, is a valuable means to an end. The end is reality, when you graduate and have to work in the field. Having a good teaching staff and a mentor that can drill your concepts and exploration is necessary. I was inspired by not only my major classes but my core academia subjects. You can learn a trade at any school, but learning to make simple and clever decisions is priceless. School Ranking depends on many factors that are economical. The best film school may not necessarily be the best for you. Yet, location is important. Decide where you want to work after you graduate and try to get in a school in that area. Moving across the country and trying to make connections with a diploma and a reel in your hand is not reasonable. Most people get hired because the have friends that have friends. Good luck with your decision.

Re: the best film schools in the world
about the NFTA in the Netherlands (Nederlandse film en televisie academy.... Dutch film and television academy) I think it's realy good!
Digital FIlm Academy
I attended the schools 14 week program and I felt that they did a great job of covering digital filmmakings most important aspects, as well as some of the smaller bits of it that turn out to be all important as well. DFA's equipment allowed me to make my vision come to life and even after my completion of the program, I'm still welcomed back with open arms for whatever help or advice I might need.
Re: Digital FIlm Academy
Columbia College Chicago
Columbia College Chicago is a bonafide top 5 USA Film School. It's a shame it wasn't on that list.
Chapman University
I would consider Chapman University to be one of the top film schools in the nation. The professors are in the business working, when they are not teaching. AFI's head dean, Bill Dill ASC, is now a head dean at Chapman University's film school. Not many schools have professors that are a part of the ASC joining faculty. Another notable faculty member is John Badham, the director of Saturday Night Fever and some episodes of Heroes. Chapman is the only film school in the country/world to have its own Spirit 4K (datacine), Lustre suites, and Motion Capture Stage. A student does not have to wait until their junior year to touch a camera. ALSO, CHAPMAN DOES NOT OWN YOUR FILMS LIKE FSU. ALSO, location for FSU? Tallahassee, think about your involvement with camera rental companies, and contacts... are they in Tallahassee? I have had three internships already, one of them including Panavision Inc. this fall. Some other facts about this film school:
1. 60 million dollar building
2. 500 seat theatre
3. Lustre Suites
4. Datacine
5. Available Equipment for rent, including BL4's (35mm), depending what class you are in. Most cameras and equipment less then 3 years old.
6. Motion Capture Stage
7. Make up room
4. Sound Stages with all of the works- 5Ks, 4Ks, 2K zippers, kinos, etc...
5. Green room
6. Audio Suites
7. Editing suites
8. 2 Editing Bays
9. Audition Rooms
10. Foley Stage
The list goes on, but I am too tired to write it all.
.
USC and Chapman are the top film schools right now. UCLA is riding on its reputation, not as good as Chapman and USC. USC, you might not be able to have the position you want in your thesis, because there are so few directors chosen. AFI is really amazing, but extremely hard to get into. I'm saying this considering I got into Chapman at an 8% acceptance rate. NYU, great for directors. FSU is a great film school, I have visited, great. Bad location and they own your films. Columbia College Chicago, open acceptance to all freshman, then they weed students out. I would not recommend this school. It does not teach you how to be apart of the motion picture business, and it's equipment is not up to date. I went there during high school to get credits out of the way. I heard Columbia and Northwestern are good schools as well, along with University of Texas Austin.
I hope this helps.
Bard College (Hudson Valley New York)
This small school in the Hudson Valley used to have a very good film department that focused on experimental, independent filmmaking. Faculty included filmmakers like Ernie Gehr, Warren Sonbert, Bruce Baillie, Adolfas Mekas, Andrew Noren and film theory folks like Ken Kelman, Paul Arthur and P. Adams Sitney. Is it still a cool place to learn to make films? --Chloe at A$&M
columbia college
i was thinking of going there, can you tell me a little more about their program/reputation in the industry?
your opinion is much appreciated.
columbia college
i like your post. i hope i can get into chapman univ. but if i can't i was thinking of columbia college as my safe school. since you don't find this school great quality, maybe you can suggest a school which has a better reputation but easier to get into than chapman?
your opinion is much appreciated.
