I'm gonna be perfectly honest. I'm a n00b when it comes to film making. I have an extreme passion for film and i am eager to make films. I have made a few for projects and such, but these past few months have made me realize that this is something i want to do for the rest of my life. The only school i applied to that has a film school is Loyola Marymount, and I was wondering if this is a decent film school. Also, how hard is it to get accepted to the film school, and lastly, will this school prepare me for a future in film? Thank you for your input.
Re: Loyola Marymount University
Loyola is a good choice. I think the program there is getting better and better every year. I dont think they are on a USC or AFI standard yet but they are making progress. They have nice sound stages and good equipment. A degree in film can certainly help you prepare for a future in film but there is no guarantee. Only because you graduated from film school doesn't ensure you a job in Hollywood. Good luck.
Re: Loyola Marymount University
I am also going to apply to it, but I would like to know some openions about it before sending app form.
Hi guy/gal-- current lmu
Hi guy/gal-- current lmu film student here. Basically it's the same story everywhere. Take this simple test to find out if film school is for you. It's a one question wonder: What are your hobbies? If your answer does not include making movies, then it's probably a bit on the risky side to go to film school... Everybody loves watching movies, but making them is a different story... if you haven't gotten a chance to get into filmmaking for whatever reason, my advice would be to use your mom's hi8 camcorder or your camera phone or somethin' to make a little short film (ex: the dog and his ball) and if you don't feel proud of yourself afterward... if you don't even feel motivated to make it good (read:fun for viewers like me and you to watch)... then you don't belong near a film school...because the main ingredient--PASSION--will be missing.
Well, it's as simple as that... But to make sure you get it, an analogy: Why did the chicken cross the road? Because he knew he had to. So, you're that chicken... If you can't think of a good reason to go to film school (it may be as simple as "I friggin love making movies") then don't go at all.... Loyola's perks are closeness to internship area, lengthy meaty intership, freedom to write, sound edit, animate, or shoot movies as you please, and small class sizes... But no school is perfect and the big dogs like NYU and USC have their perks too... In my opinion, though, it's all about you... Do you like what you're doing-- if you do, it will show in the work you put out.
Best luck!
