I am looking at getting a new laptop... I definitely want a Mac, but I don't have a ton of money to spend. I was looking at getting a G4 Powerbook 15" with the superdrive and then adding RAM and (external) harddrive space, but does anyone have any other suggestions? I was thinking I would up it to a gig of RAM and get a fairly large (250 gig) external HD. Also, I was planning to get Final Cut Pro, but I don't know much about Avid, and was wondering if someone could explain the pros and cons / differences between the two different systems... keeping in mind that I am on a budget. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Chris

Re: Advice on a laptop for editing
Chris, I have the same set up as the one you want. The PowerMac G4 15" is really nice, since it isnt too small (12") and isnt too big (17"). Its completely decked out with the best internals apple has to offer and the total got around $3,000. Along side of that, I got a LaCie 500GB external drive and that was a hole in my wallet. The 250GB should be good enough if you dont want to get to the point where you have to take out a loan. As for the software, get FCP HD. It's an excellent program and you definatly get what you pay for. It's retail price is $1000 but if you do your homework (ebay) you can find for 1/2 if not less the retail. Now I was a long Adobe Premiere Pro user and FCP does take a lot of getting used to. As for if your a PC user, Macs have a way of confusing Microsoft minds, but Apple is the way to go. I would recommend your list a lot, its a super set up and I also would advice that later on you get a LCD monitor and hook it up to the apple, nothing is like editing movies with dual monitors. Good luck. Bill

Thanks Bill. Also, I'm actually a mac user, its just that my iMac 266 is a bit outdated... I've been using my dad's computer, just because its faster. Anyway, thanks for the advice!
