Vancouver Film School confidential

I was a VFS student, a foreign VFS student, which meant i had to pay more that many other students at VFS.
During the process of "Selection" they send me a questionnaire that was absolutely ridiculous but I though that may be that was just a formality since they already knew i had the money to pay, so I give them my ridiculous answers.
The advisor that spoke to me was an attractive lady that send me her picture and told me that after completion of the program i was going to be able to work in Vancouver, that there was a lot o works for firm graduates and that it did not matter that i was a foreign student. That was a lie, a very unethical and a "is this illegal?" lie. She was cute, her name does not matter, she is probably still working there.

So i was admitted in the Film program, my demo reel was excellent and it was an "Honor" to see it, so they said. most of my classmates were foreign, some from USA, and a small amount from Canada, most of the Canadian and American ones had a loan from their governments which meant that they were going to be in debt for a long time, they still probably are in debt.
Most of that money was spent (as i saw) in drugs and alcohol, but what can you expect from teenagers that recently graduated from high school whose demo reel consisted in "amazing", very "professional and passionate" home videos they made with friends, that is Ok and nice, and if you have the money to pay why discriminate right?

If you decide to go to this school, regardless of the bad reviews is ok, but you should be aware of several things. You will have very lazy and stupid and annoying and discriminative classmates, and al so very good ones, embrace the good ones and stick to them, cause that is one of the ways you can get any good experience out of this school. In that sense you will made of this school whatever you want, even if there are really discriminative teachers that keep asking you every opportunity they can if and when are you going back home, or if the students that don't get selected to direct a movie and there fore not be famous and have greatness after school, some of those students are going to be so frustrated that they will become dead weight in your crew. I did good in my class and directed a couple of films in which i committed all the mistakes i had to make to learn how not to do a movie and how not to love the "we all are very special and talented filmmakers" attitude. Attitude is a key word in this school, not talent, don't care about talent, or if they tell you if you have it or not, you pay for the school as anybody else and that should be all that matters, it is most important to care about your attitude, a positive one, you will need it if you go there. My advice is : take the ridiculous money you will pay for the VFS name(the equivalent of a gucci brand hand bag), go to the Cuba film academy (very cheap) gain some amazing life experience and a second language , and make a movie with the money you saved and with the life experience you gained. VFS will not teach you that and to be honest, this days, very few teachers at VFS are challenging and good, the rest are boring and only play by the book.

I also managed to work at VFS four some time so i know things that you may want to know before you make a choice, i will tell you what i know, not what they will tell you (the sexy advisors) to get the salesman commission and get you in the clan.

One things i did not like about VFS, is the way they lie to you to get you in, almost like a religion, a very ridiculous religion, shame on my i guess. VFS is just a name, the way i see it , even if i did good on it (mostly due to my attitude, good classmates and some good teachers), VFS is like the Paris Hilton of Films school. If you like the bling bling and the leaked sex tapes this is the school for you. In their web site you can see some good accomplishments and good little short films, but is mostly due to good students with good drive that quickly realized it was up to them to succeed regardless of the school mentality, you can be one of them if you are really willing to spend time on it. I would go to a more interesting part of the world with all that money.

Bye for now
